Why have an AED?
Over 350,000 Americans have a Sudden Cardiac Arrest every year. A Sudden Cardiac Arrest is most often caused by a sudden onset of an abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation (VF) which causes the heart to quiver uselessly in the chest and prevents the heart from pumping blood to the lungs and body. The treatment for VF is defibrillation, which is the delivery of an electric shock to the heart, stopping VF and usually allowing the normal rhythm to resume.
If the shock is delivered to the individual in VF within 3 minutes from the time of collapse, they have a good chance for survival. For every one minute that goes by after the heart goes into ventricular fibrillation, an individual looses about 10% chance of survival, even with CPR being performed.
