AED Sales, Program Setup and Administration
Why have an AED?
Over 350,000 Americans have a Sudden Cardiac Arrest every year.
A Sudden Cardiac Arrest is most often caused by a sudden onset of
an abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation (VF) which
causes the heart to quiver uselessly in the chest and prevents the
heart from pumping blood to the lungs and body. The treatment for
VF is defibrillation, which is the delivery of an electric shock
to the heart, stopping VF and usually allowing the normal rhythm
to resume.
If the shock is delivered to the individual in VF within 3 minutes
from the time of collapse, they have a good chance for survival.
For every one minute that goes by after the heart goes into ventricular
fibrillation, an individual looses about 10% chance of survival,
even with CPR being performed.

External Defibrillator (AED) or Public Access to Defibrillation
(PAD) Program, look at these web sites:

Program Development
Every site placing an AED into service should make sure that their
program will be in compliance with the AED limited liability legislation
for that state or federal program. The AED Good Samaritan legislation
has many common elements in each state:
- They require CPR and AED training in a nationally recognized
program
- They require a prescription to obtain the AED (this is changing
and one device has already been approved for sale to homes and
businesses without a prescription and we anticipate more to follow)
- They require reporting to a state agency about the placement
of an AED (usually report is done to Emergency Medical Services
or Department of Health
- They require Medical Oversight for the AED program
- Provides immunity for some or all of the following: the business
or facility that purchases the AED for use, the physician who
writes the prescription, the employees who may use the AED to
save a life or attempt to save a life and the instructors providing
training.
